Opuntia basilaris

Beavertail Prickly Pear

The blue-gray 6” long pads are shaped much like a beaver’s tail and dotted with dense clusters of brown glochids (tiny spines) in an attractive dot-like pattern. Though considered “spineless” the glochids can cause irritation, but are a safer alternative to other cactus. Edible pear-like fruit follow the flowers.

  • Magenta, hot pink flowers in spring
  • Low, spreading habit
  • Ideal for containers or rock gardens
  • Radiant heat tolerant
